Rich from The Little Pearl was kind enough to send me a caviar set from their website for me to use as the basis for my inaugural review. I just received the package about an hour ago or less, and I have been tasting it since. The package included a 1 oz. tin of their American Sturgeon, which is one of their local caviars. Like I said in the introduction to this blog, I am no expert on gourmet, and will be learning with you for the most part, which is why I created it in the first place. Anyway, the package also included some of their European Artisan Blini (small pancakes on which one puts caviar) and a small tub of their crème fraîche. For those of you who may not know, crème fraîche is a French cream-based product, which is actually similar to sour cream, and is commonly served with caviar and blini, between the two (it helps the caviar stick to the blini, and provides more substance).
The first thing I noticed after opening the tin of caviar was that the roe (fish eggs) were quite sticky to each other, and were very small. This made it easy for me to simply dip the blini into the caviar and have some as a snack. I did not use any of the crème fraîche, since it is quite fattening, but it smelled great, and the taste of what I did have was quite pleasant and refreshing (I ate the blini cold since it was a hot day). Anyway, the caviar had a very smooth, buttery taste, but was also quite salty, and had a potent fish flavor. The fish flavor was a little bit strong for me, but otherwise, the caviar was incredibly good. I recommend you pick up a tin from the links above in the post, and tell them that Ben from the Gourmet Blog sent you.
